What we publish, how it gets checked, and where the money comes from.
Who writes this
Content is produced and reviewed by CostToRunIt Editorial. We publish appliance running costs calculated from published US Energy Information Administration residential electricity rates. Our method, sources and assumptions are documented in full on the methodology page.
We do not publish invented author biographies or fabricated credentials. If you see a name on this site, it belongs to someone who actually reviewed the page.
Sourcing
Electricity rates come from the US Energy Information Administration and are updated monthly from their public API. We do not adjust, smooth or editorialise the published figures. Appliance power ratings are compiled from manufacturer specifications and published energy-use references. Our methodology page sets out which numbers are measured, which are published elsewhere, and which are our own estimates.
Review and updates
Rate data refreshes automatically each month when the EIA publishes. Written content is reviewed periodically and carries a review date. When we correct a material error we say so on the page rather than silently editing it.
Advertising
This site carries advertising, which is what pays for the hosting and the data pipeline. Advertising has no influence on our figures: the arithmetic is public, the rate source is independent, and there are no affiliate links in our calculators or comparison tables. We do not accept payment to rank an appliance more favourably, because there is no ranking to sell - the numbers fall where the arithmetic puts them.
What we will not do
- Publish a figure we cannot show the derivation for.
- Present an estimate as a measurement.
- Invent an author, a credential or a testimonial.
- Send your calculator inputs or search terms to our server. They stay in your browser.
