Dehumidifier running costs in the UK
Find the cost of running your dehumidifier from its measured electricity use, or estimate it from power and operating time. Enter your own tariff and settings: a litre rating or hours plugged in cannot tell you the electricity used.
Dehumidifier electricity cost calculator
Use watts and running time, or enter energy from a label, meter or completed load. Your inputs stay on this device.
Enter a number within each field’s limits to calculate your cost.
Your estimated energy cost
— across 365 use days per year
Power mode includes your selected duty cycle. The monthly figure assumes 30.44 use days; the annual total uses your selected use days. These are estimates at the entered rate.
Energy charges only. Standing or supply charges, purchase, installation and maintenance are excluded. See the calculation method and sources.
Before you compare costs
- A full-period kWh reading includes the cycling, fan and other powered operation that occurred during that measurement. Enter the energy directly.
- For average watts measured over the whole period, use 100% duty. For active watts, a duty estimate may omit fan-only or standby energy.
- A rating such as 20 litres per day describes water removal under specified conditions. It is neither tank size nor electrical input watts.
Hourly, 8-hour and 24-hour cost examples
These illustrative power levels stay constant for the entire period at 26.32p/kWh. They are not typical dehumidifier wattages, model measurements or recommended operating schedules.
Example rate: Ofgem GB Direct Debit, single-rate average, 1 October–31 December 2026. The table is fixed for comparison; changing the calculator updates its results only.
| Continuous electrical input | 1 hour | 8 hours | 24 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 W | £0.03 | £0.21 | £0.63 |
| 200 W | £0.05 | £0.42 | £1.26 |
| 500 W | £0.13 | £1.05 | £3.16 |
Why a 20-litre model does not always collect 20 litres
As one manufacturer example, Meaco publishes the following figures for the Arete One 20L. Both rows use 60% relative humidity (RH), but different temperatures. The figures describe this model at the listed conditions; they are not our measurements or a product recommendation.
| Room conditions | Maximum extraction | Published wattage |
|---|---|---|
| 10°C, 60% RH | 3.4 litres/day | 180 W |
| 20°C, 60% RH | 8.5 litres/day | 216 W |
The source publishes wattage at the stated conditions but does not establish a whole-day average. Do not multiply them by 24 and treat that as measured daily energy, or derive actual cost per litre. Check the documentation for your exact model and version. Meaco: Arete One 20L technical data and room conditions.
Choose the input that matches your measurement
For example, if a suitable energy meter records 1.2 kWh during one full day, that day costs £0.32 at the example rate of 26.32p/kWh. This is an illustrative reading, not expected daily use. A changing room temperature, moisture load or setting can change the next day.
- Metered energy: enter the kWh recorded and the elapsed measurement days. For a cumulative meter, subtract the start reading from the end reading. Monthly and annual projections assume that daily average continues.
- Energy per use: enter the complete kWh for one session, such as a measured laundry-drying task. Include its whole operating period and choose your own session schedule.
- Watts and hours: use average watts at 100% duty, or an explicitly estimated active-power schedule. A nameplate or condition-specific wattage is not automatically the average while connected.
- Annual energy: use a documented annual kWh figure only for its stated test or usage scenario. Do not enter litres/day or the printed annual cost as kWh.
What the humidistat and fan change
A humidistat can stop or restart dehumidification as humidity changes. That does not establish a universal daily runtime or duty cycle. Some operation can continue while the compressor is off.
For example, the June 2021 Arete One 20L/25L manual describes periodic fan humidity checks in Smart Humidity mode and fan operation during compressor pauses in Smart Laundry mode. This is model- and mode-specific behaviour, not a rule for every dehumidifier.
A complete-period energy measurement includes the powered operation during that period. Do not reduce measured kWh again with a duty-cycle percentage. If you estimate separate operating modes, count each interval and its energy once.
Compressor or desiccant: which costs less?
The type label or lower rated watts alone cannot identify the cheaper option for your room. Compare the electricity needed to achieve the same moisture-control task, within each model’s specified operating conditions. Temperature, humidity, settings and runtime matter.
Check that capacity and efficiency figures use compatible test conditions and methods. ENERGY STAR describes integrated energy factor as litres removed per kWh under its test basis; a ratio made from a household water collection or the table above is not a certified efficiency rating.
A dehumidifier can discharge warmer air, but that is not evidence of a fixed heating-bill saving. This calculator prices its electricity and does not deduct an assumed heating credit.
Using a dehumidifier to dry clothes
Compare complete loads with comparable starting moisture and final dryness. Include the full dehumidifier session and any separate heated-airer or additional room-heating energy used for that task. Do not add supporting energy again if the meter reading already includes it.
A laundry-mode timer is not a guarantee that every load will finish in that time. Water collected can also come from other room moisture, so litres collected alone do not prove that two drying methods completed the same laundry task.
Apply your tariff and actual use schedule
Cost in pounds = kWh x your electricity price in p/kWh / 100. The daily standing charge is separate because switching this appliance off does not remove the household charge.
On Economy 7 or another time-of-use tariff, price each period’s energy at its applicable rate and add the amounts. There is no automatic night-time saving on a single-rate tariff.
In watts-and-hours mode, the monthly equivalent uses 30.44 use days. Set annual use-days to your expected season; a 365-day total is not a recommendation to run the appliance all year. All future costs hold the entered tariff constant.
Common questions
How much does a dehumidifier cost to run for eight hours?
For an illustrative constant 200 W, eight hours uses 1.6 kWh and costs £0.42 at 26.32p/kWh. Actual energy can differ with the model, operating mode and cycling. Enter measured kWh when available.
Does leaving a dehumidifier on for 24 hours mean 24 hours at full power?
No. The humidistat and selected mode can change operation, and some models run a fan while the compressor is paused. A full-day kWh measurement is more informative than treating connected time as continuous nameplate power.
Can I work out electricity use from a 12-litre or 20-litre rating?
No. Litres per day describes water removal at specified test conditions. It is not a wattage or kWh figure, and actual water removal in your room can differ. Use electrical input information or a representative energy measurement.
Is a dehumidifier always cheaper than a tumble dryer?
There is no universal result from an hourly wattage comparison. Compare the total kWh for the same load reaching comparable dryness, including any supporting equipment. The linked drying comparison accepts complete-task energy.
Should I enter a duty cycle for measured kWh?
No additional duty adjustment is needed. The measured kWh already contains the cycling that happened during the measurement. If using average measured watts instead, enter those watts with 100% duty.
Can I use this calculator in Northern Ireland?
Yes, with your own tariff in p/kWh. The Ofgem reference covers Great Britain and should not be used as a Northern Ireland electricity price.
